About the Bob White

Northern Bobwhites are a common quail. They are found in Central and Eastern United States and Mexico (see light shaded area below).

They eat seeds, fruits, plants, insects, and spiders. They live in grasslands and brush near forests.

In the Springtime they build their nests on the ground and hide them with grass. The baby bobwhites leave within hours of hatching.

A mother bobwhite lays 8 to 16 eggs. The young hatch in about three weeks. After that they feed themselves. The father usually watches over the babies, while the mother is already sitting on a new nest.

The bobwhites form a covey (a circle similar to the illustration above for warmth and protection) and join other families to form this natural way of "bedding down at night". This appears to be like a circle of covered wagons where they have 360 degrees of protection.
